Whiteinch Centre Newsletter – First Edition!

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Thanks to the efforts of our IT Projects class last term, the Centre has produced its first newsletter.  We aim to bring it out on a quarterly basis, letting people know what’s coming up in the Centre and in the local community.

This issue has information about the Touching The Sky play on Saturday 22nd January, as well as news about classes at the Centre and news from the Regeneration Manager.

If you would like to be added to the email mailing list, please let Ruth at the Centre know, by phoning the centre or emailing her at rbain@whiteinchcentre.org.uk.

Friday, January 7th, 2011

We’d like to wish everyone a very happy 2011!

We’re in the process of planning some new activities and classes at the Centre for the next few months including a new Basic IT class for absolute beginners, an IT drop-in session open to all and a new Confidence Building course.

Also in the offing for the New Year is a new course from Glasgow University.  Build on your Creative Writing skills by joining our planned script writing class.

Dates and times will be confirmed for all the above classes as soon as possible.

Please contact Ruth at the Centre to put your name down for any of the above.

Alternatively, if you have any suggestions for 2011 at The Whiteinch Centre, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.

Comic Workshops at the Whiteinch Centre

Friday, October 1st, 2010
comic_classes
  • Starting from 13th October 2010, every Wednesday evening for ten weeks, 7-9pm.
  • The course costs £80 (£8 per session), and will cover a variety of topics, including the history of comics and the art of scriptwriting, moving onto the development of characters and plots into sketches and finished pages. We’ll cover colouring, lettering and publication as well.

The ten weeks will allow us to focus on practical aspects of comic creation such as panelling, perspective and anatomy of expression. We will do this in a way that means you don’t have to be an experienced artist to take part. In fact, if you’re more interested in writing comics, this course will still be of value, and you’ll learn how to build a comic before potentially pairing up with an artist to ‘co-create’. Everyone who participates will get the chance to complete their own comic – be it a three panel strip or a full one, two or three pages.

All participants are encouraged to bring along a new sketchbook and notebook in which to work; all other materials will be supplied.

To register for the course, or for further information, please contact Garry by email to comicworkshops@yahoo.co.uk

Autumn 2010 – Glasgow University DACE

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

classes-autumn-copy   The Autumn 2010 season is upon us and new classes have been booked.  Glasgow University is running three courses in the Centre, planned to start in early October.  These courses are eligible for ILA funding – contact Ruth at the Centre for help getting your own learning account.

  • Film-making is a new course to the Centre and will be an 8 week course looking at the development of an idea and screenplay, followed by some technical filmmaking exercises based on the students’ scripts.
  • An introductory counselling skills course is being offered also for 8 weeks.  This course is not accredited, but will give an insight into some basic techniques.
  • Discovering Whiteinch on the internet:  This course combines a very gentle introduction to using computers to search the internet, and a chance to look for and find resources connected to Whiteinch and your own working and family lives. There are many free resources on the internet, such as photographs, newspapers, books, library and archive catalogues and personal stories. We will find records of local employment, education and entertainment, and work together to produce some local history materials that we can share with the rest of the community. Monday afternoons, from 3pm to 5pm, for eight
    weeks.

We’re really pleased to have Sheila and Campbell back from more of Get With Whiteinch’s IT classes.  This year, we’re trying out a new course on Laptop/PC maintenance – come and learn how to look after your computer properly – there are a few spaces still available.  Glasgow Life are bringing back their ever-popular Basic IT class, taught by Pauline.  This class and the Digital Photography class are sadly, full at the moment but spaces may become available.  Glasgow Life are also offering help with Literacy and Numeracy in the Centre.

Other classes include Art with Lou Prendergast.  Lou led a great Art group at the Centre last year – their work is currently on display in the Cafe.  Creative Writing is being offered once again with Julie from Glasgow Life.

And if that weren’t enough, there are still places available on Anniesland College’s NC courses in the Centre – Inspired Community IT and Medical Administration – for people between the ages of 16 and 64 who are not in full-time employment.

The Whiteinch Centre’s courses are offered free of charge. To book spaces, or to find out more, contact Ruth on 0141 950 4434 or by email to rbain@whiteinchcentre.org.uk
